2007 Macef Design Award - Ceramics for Breakfast

07.31.07 | Comment?

Remember the Compost Vase by Chris Kriby that I have featured a few days ago? The Compost Vase is actually one of the ten highly commended winning entries in the recent 2007 Macef Design Award. Today I am going to feature some of the other the winning entries for this design competition.

The theme of the 2007 Macef Design Award was Ceramics for Breakfast.

Here are the winners:

First prize - Glide
By George Watson from UK

There has been little development of the toaster since the start of the century, whilst other appliances have developed and improved incorporating new technologies and thinking, toaster have remained relatively untouched. When the toaster was first invented eating toast was a social activity that took place on the breakfast table, these days toasters have been relegated to cheap plastic objects hidden away in the kitchen landscape. This toaster is designed to engage the user, re-invigorating the social context of toasting by questioning everything about what we toast with today. I was also keen to make playful object to be proud of having on your breakfast table. Slip molded bone china allowed me create this intricate and sculptural form, but also provided the material longevity that I required. This is a toaster that brings life and joy to a stagnant domestic appliance and iconic object for the home.

Honorable Mentions - Brick-a-bowl
By Spitshuis Lidewij from Netherlands

Brick-a-bowls, eat food from the street * * * Brick-a-bowls are inspired by the pattern of the Dutch streets. They are made out of small terracotta bricks that make up the pattern of the pavement. The milled edges resemble skyline. The bricks are only visible on the inside of the bowls. The outside is smooth and shiny. Currently the bowls are completely craftwork; they are actually build brick by brick. However, it’s possible to produce them in a more industrial way. By means of fine-meshed gauze with a terracotta brick-pattern on it, (like Bricanion lathing) it is easy to create organic forms. The outside will be filled up, smoothened and covered with lacquer. The inside of the bowls will be pointed to enhance the contrast in the brick pattern.
