  • LG Electronics e-book

[ Winner of Red Dot Design Concept 2006 Best of Best Award ]

Electronic, eco-sensitive, and ergonomic, this smart portable PC has been designed to give users the feeling of reading a slim magazine.

The portable PC is getting slimmer and lighter, while the display screen is getting wider and bigger. In order to satisfy these basic requirements, the e-book uses double-sided OLEDs to quadruple the display screen and achieve an enhanced visual effect. When it is opened, the lower portion can be used as a sub screen. The bottom screen also displays a QWERTY keypad or Note to allow the user’s input through various methods – typing, writing and so on, by adopting touch-sensor technology. OLED can be used as the e-book’s fashionable skin to suit the user’s personality. It can also act as a screen saver.

The use of a liquid fuel cell is an environmentally-friendly solution, which also provides a degree of freedom of being “wireless”. Existing fuel cells, like lithium batteries, are commonly used, but cause many environmental problems after being discarded. The liquid fuel cell has an eco-friendly method of obtaining electrochemical energy from the chemical reaction of natural gas and methanol. The e-book has been specifically designed with the use of the liquid fuel cell. It is designed to visually express the mixture of two heterogeneous liquids contained in the common transparent cell. This cell allows users to visually determine how much fuel is left by the amount of coloured air in the cell. The fuel cell is designed to feel like a perfume bottle. This electronic device is able to give out a perfumed scent, so the refilling system is designed to feel as if the user is handling a perfume bottle.

Future products should not force users adapt to them, but should adapt to users! The e-book is not only a slim, portable PC; its design is also focused on usability. The ergonomics, such as the turning of the page and the contact points with the hand, have been integrated with the design.
